Target Dog and Age Range: |
Dogs needing basic obedience skills, 1 year and older (younger dogs admitted with instructor approval). No dogs are brought to the first/orientation class. A new class will begin every 4 weeks. |
Goals: |
To promote responsible dog ownership; to help dogs become well-mannered members of the family; socialized with other dogs and people working in the same area; problem solving for minor behavior problems; and developing basic skills for other dog sports. |
Prerequisite skills: |
None |
Promotion requirements: |
Dogs must be reasonably calm around other dogs/people and the owner
must have control of dog verbally and physically to enroll in other GLKC classes |
Class size, duration: |
Maximum 4 dog/handler teams, 8 weeks, one hour per week. |

S.T.A.R. Puppy Class (Socialization Training Activity Responsibility)
This class is based off of puppy age, please contact instructor for details on upcoming classes.

Target Dog and Age Range: |
Puppies needing household manners, 4 months and under 1 year as of the 1st day of class |
Goals: |
- To help puppies become well-mannered members of the household
- Contolled socializing of the puppies with new dogs, people and objects
- Beginning problem solvig for minor behavior problems (potty training, jumping, etc)
- Fundamentals for entry into Beginner Obedience and CGC Classes |

Promotion requirements: |
Must be able to complete S.T.A.R. exercises listed in the AKC S.T.A.R brochure
- Class participants will be assessed using standard guidelines (consistent with the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Evaluator Guide)
Use of the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Evaluator Test Form will track completion of desired behaviors and report to the AKC
Puppies that pass the S.T.A.R. Puppy test will receive from the AKC
- A frameable certificate designating the puppy as a S.T.A.R. Puppy

Excel spreadsheets will be used to record both attendance and progress.

Class size, duration: |
- 6-8 dog/handler teams (minimum of 4 teams)
- 6 weeks/1 hour per week
- Class #1 would be a handler only class introduction followed by Class #2-#6 consisting of dog/handler team training |
Skills covered in class: |
Owner Behaviors
- Maintains puppy's health (vaccines, exam, appears healthy)
- Owner receives Responsible Dog Owner's Pledge
- Owner describes adequate daily play and exercise plan
- Owner and puppy attend at least 6 classes by an AKC Approved CTGC Evaluator
- Owner brings bags to classes for cleaning up after puppy
- Owner has obtained some form of ID for puppy (color tag, microchip, etc)
Puppy Behaviors
- Free of aggression toward people during at least 6 weeks of class
- Free of aggression toward other puppies in class
- Tolerates collar or body harness of owner's choice
- Owner can hug or hold puppy (depending on size)
- Puppy allows owner to take away a treat or toy
Pre-Canine Good Citizen Test Behaviors
- Allows (in any position) petting by a person other than the owner
- Grooming-Allows owner handling and brief exam (ears, feet)
- Walks on a leash-Follows owner on lead in a straight line (15 steps)
- Walks by other people-Walks on leash past other people 5-ft
- Sits on command-Owner may use a food lure
- Down on command-Owner may use a food lure
- Comes to owner from 5-ft when name is called
- Reaction to Distraction-distractions as presented 15-ft away
- Stay on leash with another person (owner walks 10 steps and returns)
Other learned behaviors
- Basic clicker concepts
- Interactive exercises (box game and other shaping games)
- Familiarization with new objects

To prepare dogs and handlers for th AKC Canine Good Citizen Test |

Promotion requirements: |
Dogs and handlers must pass all ten items of the Canine Good Citizen Test |

Maximum eight dog/handler teams, eight weeks, one hour per week |
