Class name: Novice Competition Obedience Target dogs and age range: Dogs whose handlers want to pursue competition obedience,6 months and up Goals: to introduce skills needed for obedience competition Prerequisites: it is recommended that the dog and handler complete a basic obedience class using positive reinforcement methods before enrolling in this class. The GLKC Basic Obedience (Beginning Clicker) or CGC classes are recommended. Promotion requirements: the dog and handler must have received one or more legs (score of 170 or higher) at a Novice level obedience competition. Class size, duration: Maximum 6 dog/handler teams, 8 weeks, one hour per week Publications for instructor guidance: AKC/UKC obedience rules, regulations, and guidelines, “Steppin' Up to Success with Terri Arnold, Book1: Theory, Footwork, Attention & Handling”, “Clicker Training for Obedience” by Morgan Spector Skills covered in class: Heel on leash Heel off-leash Figure Eight (on-leash) Stand for Examination (off-leash) Recall (off leash) Long Sit (1 minute off-leash) Long Down (3 minutes off-leash) Equipment provided by the handler: Collar (buckle, quick release, or martingale, head halters or other collars must receive prior approval from the instructor) Leash (4 to 6 foot fabric or leather) Soft bite-sized treats Clicker (optional) may be purchased in class Equipment provided by GLKC: Stopwatch, long lines, 2-6 pylons, AKC obedience rules, regulations, and guidelines
